I want to switch 120 VAC at low current (about 2 Amps) with a physically small switch. Should I use a triac plus isolated driver, or just a couple of mosfets with a simple driver? The crux is that this has to fit in the standard switch box along with the switch.

If you want a off the shelf solution there is the Opto22 I/O modules, you can get the various ones surplus on ebay if needed.
You can get them in 5v or 24vdc input switching, they also come with integral fuse and LED indicator.
Very compact all you need is the control input voltage and connect to load.
Max.

I know you mentioned 2A current.
But, if 1.2A max works for you, take a look at AQ-H series from Panasonic. With opto-coupler built in, as BobTPH mentioned.
Search on Digikey: https://www.digikey.com/products/en/relays/solid-state-relays/183?k=AQH
I might be able to live with 1.2 on the 120VAC.
I have used an opto-coupled triac SSR that comes in a dip-8. Is that small enough?

Bob
That's small enough if it can control in excess of 1 amp on the 120VAC output.
