I hope this doesn't hijack the thread but, is it OK when using Vero/strip board to put resistors in a "radial"(for lack of better word) configuration? By radial I mean, bending one lead into a "U" shape to solder to a track right next to another track. Sort of like how a ceramic cap is used. In many circuits it would make the board size smaller and use less jumpers, but can't find any reference if it is good or even common practice to do it.

 

It is not seen that much now in modern circuits also due to SMT technology etc, but I see nothing wrong with it, (I do it all the time!).

I couldn't see anything wrong either, with doing it that way. The only thing I could find was a guy on one of the guitar effects forums claiming, "never do it", with no reason given. Caps and other radial components are done that way.

I do that all the time too. That doesn't mean it is right. Any small change in inductance, capacitance, or resistance is trivial for what I do. Note, the 1206 SMD is 0.12" long. That means it will also solder on a 0.1" grid. However, using the resistors vertical is easier.

I wouldn't give a lot of weight to what an audio freak says.
