I want to code an UNO with a simple control where I can turn a knob (the timer), then press a button which starts a stepper motor (speed will be hard-coded). The knob determines the run time, which will be somewhere between 0-10secs. Then the motor will stop and wait for the next push of the button. So I am guessing a potentiometer of some sort but which one? There are millions to choose from. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

 

If you are using the potentiometer as a simple voltage divider across 5V then anything linear about 10k will work.

Unless you want very fine control of the run time a single-turn pot is ok. For fine control, a multi-turn pot might be better.
