Hi,

This is starting to sound like "Disaster Movie" which was funny as all heck.

Did anyone mention solar flares yet?
Yes, geomagnetic-storms. Most of the mitigation efforts for solar flares also are effective for E-3 EMP on earth by decoupling/reducing DC/VLF current paths on long AC transmission lines to stop transformer saturation from the high currents and their destruction from Joule heating.

Sure they still use it. It's the last resort after all other systems have failed or been destroyed, quadruple redundant, network offline, alien attack, end of the world, final countdown, press the red planet kill button system that's deep in the deepest bunker.
1. When you make this kind project (from post #1) you can not change part of them. You have to rethink the whole project. (eq. replace with 5$ 16GB SD Card)
2.Radiation damages semiconductors and memory units.
The bigger the dimension of the bit, the harder is for radiation to destroy it. The same with the transistor from the IC.
The cosmic radiation "daily" crosses the Earth.
