UPVC Window Restrictors

I have vertically hinged UPVC windows. When open the position is maintained only by friction which normally is fine. But today it is windy and I opened the window about three inches but the wind grabbed it and slammed it wide open.

I would like a system which allows the open position to be set and maintain that position despite the wind but the only things I can find - call window restricters - only allow the window to open an inch or two.

Does anyone know a system which works like I want and could be retrofitted?

In the old days back when I was young we called them sticks ? What it actually was, was an old broom stick cut to length. We use them at night above the window to keep it from being forced open and in the day to hold the window open. I'm pretty sure it would work on a tilting window.
It's simple and cheap! You can buy round wooden rods ( 3/4" to 1" ) at most hardware stores. Hardwood would last longer. Paint. varnish or stain to match your window color. Beats the hell outta trying to buy and rig up something electric.

Not a very elegant solution ...

The plan must be to increase the friction on the slider ... Sand paper the area which is slid over , or paint it ... If the device which does the sliding is a metal grip as in some designs get some mole grips and squeeze it tighter

Something like these needed?
Exactly the kind of thing I am looking for but it would be very difficult and ugly to fit to my window.

I have ordered one of these which will limit the opening width but can be easily released (this is important as the windows are my emergency exits - it is a bungalow). This allows only one fixed opening but I will try it out and see how well it works for me.

Hi Albert.
Some of our windows have an adjustment for the amount of friction on the hinge sliders.

This is a picture of one of them. You may have a similar type but have not noticed the adjusting screw.

Where your adjuster is, I have a release lever so you can turn the window outside in so you can clean the outside of the window from the inside.

This must be a very common problem ...When the windows are new the stiffness is just right , after many years of opening and closing , inevitably , they will slide more easily , and the manufacturer will have a solution for this ..... Either an adjustment screw as above , or something else ...
I'm sure a search will find many solutions .
