Warning: Rant time

Why is it every darn website I use has to 'update' itself every two or three months? Google, Chrome, other forums, YouTube... It gets so annoying... As soon as I finally get used to how it is, bam, another update, and everything is interactive, and drop down menus, and search suggestions, etc etc...

No.

All I want is a website that lets me search for what I want to search for. Nothing else. Now I'm running into problems, for some reason Chrome refuses to load certain web pages. Never happened once before this wonderful update. New and improved apparently. New, but not improved.

A little apps button, to visit things now. Yeah, that's helpful.

And then another electronics forum has to upgrade, wonderful. After it playing with me, it now totally refuses to let me log in. So there we have it, I can't visit that place anymore.

/rant.

But seriously, why do companies keep thinking we need to change stuff? It has frustrated me no end this Google and Chrome update. As far as I'm aware it is all aesthetic.

Right on, Sparky. I've noticed the same thing. As soon as you get used to a youtube layout, they change it and make it look stupid. Same goes with facebook. As for the electronic forum, I am assuming you're referring to electro-tech online. That was the first actual update in the past 10 years or so, and the administrator has done a very good job making it look as close to the original as possible. However, I must admit it was one of the reasons I left (hence one of my more recent threads here begging AAC not to change anything ). I can deal with the chrome update (it looks a little different, but still functions the same way) as I can figure it out fairly easily. Stupid? No. Unnecessary? Absolutely.

If a site has a reason to change its look, then I'm generally ok with it, unless it becomes impossible to navigate. But sites like youtube and facebook change their look just for the heck of it. I strongly disagree with that, and I wish they'd just keep the old look, or at least allow the users to switch back to older layouts if desired.

What I very much despise, though, are all the animated flash ads that pop up and float around your screen forcing you to pay at least close enough attention to find the "close" button, if one even exists. I make it a point to put those products on my "do not buy under any circumstances" list.

Even worse are the video ads (with accompanying loud audio) that start as soon as you launch a page. That's all I need is my employees hearing a loud Viagra advertisement being broadcast from my office...

Use Adblock. I haven't had a problem with any type of ad for over two years. I can't recommend it strongly enough. It's a free add-on for chrome and for firefox. Not sure about other browsers like IE, but I really don't recommend anything other than Chrome or FF.

Funny, I used Adblock for years on Firefox, and then some time ago there was a stink from some advertisers and Adblock was disabled for a while, I guess. Around that point I began using Chromium (the open-source version of Chrome) and forgot about it. Thanks for reminding me!

Not a problem! I am very pleased with Adblock, and I would never think of using a web browser without it!

 

I live for updates! I grow bored with layouts on the day they are released, and can't wait for them to be changed up again. It's like a game; "find the link that you used to know the location of." keeps me on my toes, constant mental exercise to keep me from getting stagnant.

Yes, my sarcasm doesn't come across as ingenuinely as I intend it to, ever. Hence the sarcasm tag. Damn this digital world without voice inflection and body language. Sometimes I try to make it as obvious as possible, without go so far as to include the sarcasm tag, but I still get people taking me seriously. So sarcasm tag it is then.

I swear guys, I really do understand how sarcasm works, and if you could hear me talk, you would get me. Since you can't, I guess I'll always be that guy who says awkward things.

 

It's not just web-sites that annoyingly update. Android tablets, by default (and if there's a setting somewhere to over-ride the default I haven't yet found it!) update their operating system surreptitiously. The last time that happened to me half my monthly capped broadband quota was gobbled up without my say so

Talking of Fbook updates I had this notification today.

It's bad enough that Facebook use your personal data to target adverts at you. Now it seems they're intent on not just giving away your name and browsing history, but also your credit card number too.

It's part of a plan to make online shopping easier. The idea is that you tell Facebook your credit card details, then, when you want to buy something online, you use your Facebook account to provide an app with your payment details automatically.

Allowing users to pay for things through their Facebook account is all part of the company's plans to make more money out of smartphone users.

The idea is that if you're buying something on a smartphone, it's easier to do it using your Facebook app rather than typing out your payment details each time.

Ideally for Facebook, you'll simply click on an advert while browsing Facebook on your smartphone and they'll be able to get you to easily pay for something - no doubt making a profit off both the advert and your payment!

It doesn't take a security genius to see what is wrong with this. For a start, Facebook don't seem to be that careful with basic personal data, so what's to say they'd keep your credit card number safe?

Added to that, it surely won't be long before some fake apps, created by cyber criminals, manage to make their way onto Facebook and start harvesting credit card details for the purposes of online fraud.

And, if you lose your mobile, anyone could use the Facebook mobile app to gain access to your payment details.

The feature, called Autofill with Facebook, is currently only enabled for a few Facebook users while it is being rolled out, but the plan is to make it available to all users in the future.

If you see the feature on your Facebook profile any time soon, take my advice and give it a miss.

Facebook already know enough about each and every one of their users. Giving them personal details such as your credit card number is a recipe for disaster.

 

Since I started to useFirefox, every single plugin is to be updated because, "as is, it is vulnerable". So there we go updating Flash and Adobe and... and...

Yesterday I installed a complement that block scripts and then nothing could run. After one hour, uninstalled forever. The sole complement that is worth, Adblock. Installing it, one of the best piece of advice I got, ever.

And then, FF wants itself updated and then their start page that I cannot eliminate.

Yes, many reasons for a rant.

I would like to see sites with text, pictures and a long, ordered index as books. And then I would not be more than 50% of the time looking for where to look at something.

I get those all the time, and can assure you they are all fake. People love to post hoaxes like this on Facebook just for the sake of fooling people. I bet if you googled that text plus the word "hoax", you'll find that's exactly what it is.

Let's the context and text make for the interpretation. If you cannot convey sarcasm with your text, try a better one.

HAHA! That's exactly what I said in the sarcasm font thread. I abhor "sar" and "rant" tags. Seriously, if you aren't creative enough to get your point across, then just write normally. Using those ridiculous tags just makes it easier to rationalize overusing things that are better used sparingly.

Remember, less is more.
