understanding the logic of timer delay in STM32F407

Hello,My APB1 bus frequency is 21Mhz as shown in the clock diagram bellow.
I have the following code for timer delay shown in the photo bellow.
I have PSC register and ARR register to define the TIMER.
In timer we are counting up every clock tick up and ARR is the value where we are reseting the counting.
from the RM link shown bellow,We have other registers like CCR1,DIER,EGR.
I am trying to understand the logics of this registers.
I Cant find in the CR register the counter overflow interrupt option.
Where is it?

Thanks.

There are two types of polling algorithms, (1) blocking and (2) non-blocking.

(1) blocking functions will wait until a given event has occurred before moving on with code execution.
Usually, delay( ) functions are blocking because the purpose of the delay( ) function is to suspend code execution for a given length of time.

(2) non-blocking functions are useful when you want to continue with code execution while waiting for a given event. Non-blocking can be implemented with or without interrupts.

Test that the TIM4 module is working without interrupts. You can use the debugger and observe that CNT register is being altered.
PSC = 0 and ARR = 0xFFFF should cause the UIF bit in SR to go to 1 every 780μs (with 84MHz clock).

In software you can test UIF bit in TIM4->SR and reset it when it goes to 1. Toggle a GPIO pin when this happens.

There is no CR register, only CR1 and CR2.
The status and interrupt flags are in SR.

Hello MrChips,SYSCLK shown bellow is 168MHz
and there is an interrupt called systick handler.
So this kind on handler will be call every 1/(168000000) seconds?

in the manual for some reason they say that systick handler is called every 1miliseccond.
They say its because of
SYSTICK_CONFIG(SytemCoreClock/1000);
which makes the systick a 1 milli second.
i cant see how its happening.
Thanks.

SYSCLK is 168MHz. This is the clock speed of the MCU. The interrupt speed is not related to this (except for interrupt latency).
The SYSTICK timer is part of the ARM core, called Cortex System timer. It would be best to leave this alone.

For what you are doing you need to focus on the clock source of TIM4.

Hello MrChips I have written the following code for microsecond delay ,i just use delay(1000) to have 1milisecond delay.
I cant see the dinammic of the the delay.
my APB1 clock is 21Mhz ,ARR=21 makes the counter to overflow every 1MHz and call the TIM4_IRQHandler function which will increase myticks by 1.
but how in parralel the delay function will check if myticks<us, as i see it ,we will be stuck on the delay "while"
how in paralel the TIM4_IRQHandler will run timer overflow?
Thanks.

Code:
   void delay(int us)

    {

        TIM4->CR1|=TIM_CR1_CEN;

        myticks=0;

        while(myticks<us);

        TIM4->CR1&=~TIM_CR1_CEN;

    }

void TIM4_IRQHandler(void)

{

    myticks++;

  TIM4->SR&=~TIM_SR_UIF;

}

int main(void)

{

    RCC->APB1ENR|=RCC_APB1ENR_TIM4EN;

    TIM4->PSC=0;

    TIM4->ARR=21;

    TIM4->CR1|=TIM_CR1_URS;

    TIM4->DIER|=TIM_DIER_UIE;

    TIM4->EGR=TIM_EGR_UG;

    NVIC_EnableIRQ(TIM4_IRQn);

myticks gets incremented once every 1μs.

while(myticks<us);
will eventually be FALSE.

I would change the declaration
void delay(int us) to
void delay(unsigned long us)

and declare myticks globally as unsigned long also.

HellO MrChips.At first i used HAL_DELAY to control my DAC,and i got the following shape on my scope as shown bellow.
I have updated the code as you said,i get a total noise on my scope.
where did i go wrong?
Thanks.

Put a breakpoint in the TIM4_IRQHandler( ) to confirm that it is being called.
If you have an oscilloscope, toggle a GPIO pin in TIMR_IRQHandler( ) and measure the interrupt period.

Hello MrChips,i added the toggle line and my HOME scope gave me a result as shon bellow.
Its not very accurate,but we see 1Mhz clock signal.
So the Irqhandler works great.
in the delay finction Myticks increasing evey 1microsecond is comparing myticks to us value in a while loop.
I tried to call delay(500000) and put the toggle before and after the loop to see if my led is blinking every half a second.
it didnt blink every half a second it stayed ON ,So for some reason it got stuck in the while loop .
The full code is shown bellow.
Where did i go wrong?
Thanks.

Code:
void delay(unsigned long us)
    {
        HAL_GPIO_TogglePin(GPIOD, GPIO_PIN_12);
        TIM4->CR1|=TIM_CR1_CEN;
        while(myticks<us);
        myticks=0; //reset my ticks after
        TIM4->CR1&=~TIM_CR1_CEN;
        HAL_GPIO_TogglePin(GPIOD, GPIO_PIN_12);
    }

Forget the delay( ) and HAL_Delay( ) functions for now.
Modify
TIM4->ARR=21;
with higher values and watch the TIM4_IRQHandler( ) toggle output until you get consistent periods >10μs.

Make sure that you remove in every place especially in delay( ) except in TIM4_IRQHandler( ).
HAL_GPIO_TogglePin(GPIOD, GPIO_PIN_12);

Hello Mr.Chips, with PSC=0 and ARR=210 i got 10us period as shown in the scope photo bellow.
Its still gets stuck on the while loop,I tried to toggle LED with DELAY(500000) and i didnt see any togling.
i put the LED toggling inside "delay" as a comment later.
The full code updated is shown bellow.
What could be done?
Thanks.

Your output is not toggling properly. If it were toggling properly you would see a square wave (50% duty cycle).

Remove all the code in the while loop:
while (1)
{
}

After you get this working correctly I will show you a better way to output to the DAC.

Hello Mr.chips, I have emptied the while loop as shown in the code bellow it didnt change the shape,and stayed as before.
I think ARR=420 means counting till 420 and then toggling when it overflows the counting.

I tried to put ARR=1 and PSC=210 as shown bellow so it will do overfloows on every clock cycle but it didnt work and i got the same result.
Why its not giving me 50% duty cycle?
Thanks.

Either you are using the wrong count mode, or the wrong interrupt bit.
For now, clear TIM4->SR = 0;

I will look at your mode and code later.

Hello Mr.chips TIM4->SR=0 will erase State register in every bit.
I added this line in the updated code bellow. it didnt change the shape ,i still get 10us period but 96% duty cycle.
the closest case i got to 50% duty cycle is ARR=1 and SCL=21 and only the i get a plot as shown bellow.

Do one thing at a time.

Set up
PSC = 0
ARR = 1000

empty the while loop
while (1)
{
}

Post the waveform and show all of your code.

Hello Mr Chips,I have done as you said the irq toggling is as shown bellow.
Why i get stuck in the while loop in the delay function?
Thanks.
