I want to understand how to make footprints, I already know about the leads (pins) of resistors being a certain distance from the body plus the bend radios which is in the application sheet.

But now I want to understand pads. I have a pad of this:

The diameter is 1.02mm (I guess that is the drill), I have added 0.20mm for the true whole plating and another 0.20mm for the soldering to be made. Is this good, how should I proceed normally? Also when to use rectangle and when circular pads?
