Ugh, O'scope died. Thinking about upgrade. Siglent 1202XE thoughts?

Hah! Tis English just like GTFO, IIRC, ASAP and so on. Too Long; Didn't Read. It's a common response in some, shall we say, less charitable forums than this one.

I will have a look at the compensation problem on Monday.
Regardless of what I find, there is no way I am going to go in just to install a 3.9pF cap in the input stage.
Thanks for pointing out that the issue is way overblown.

I agree with you there - it's Siglents job to fix the problem. Even though it's pretty minor to start with. It's kind of weird that people are willing to void their warranty to fix a fairly slight glitch. Of course I also find strange all the purists that are accusing Siglent of all sorts of horrible things because of this issue.

On the 1202X-E compensation point, I think the whole thing is over blown.
I agree, although I didn't read every message in that thread. I guess it just came up because some (many?) people expect that if a passive probe has been compensated at one voltage/division setting that the compensation remains stable at all other voltage/division settings, which was never an appropriate expectation (I've seen compensation points slightly wander between voltage/div settings on many scopes, even analog ones). I also remember that manufacturers like LeCroy put warnings in their manuals stating that the compensation of passive probes will change across vertical settings.

Now, not having read the whole thread, if it turned out that the included passive probes can't be properly calibrated at certain voltage/div settings then that would mean there's something really wrong, and then Siglent should collect and repair (I do agree with the sentiment of the thread that asking users to solder SMD components to the PCB of a brand new scope is not acceptable). But I'm not aware of this being the case.

I wish to report that I cannot see any signs of poor probe compensation at any VOLT/DIV setting that would warrant going to the trouble of opening the scope.

That's good to know. I'm kind of left speechless over the anger and venom that some have spewed over this (non)issue.

Anyway, the SDS1104X-E (think I used the wrong model number above) is now listed at $499 USD, deliveries in a few weeks. Compared to the Rigol 1054, it's a better scope with dual ADCs rather than the single one in the Rigol so with 4 channels active it has a higher speed. The Siglent is a 100 mhz scope but based on the ADC specs, it probably can't be hacked to 200 mhz (or should I say, the ADCs are iffy at that speed). With the free decoding option on the Rigol and the ability to SW hack it to 100 mhz, the two scopes are otherwise very much the same. Though the display on the Siglent does appear to be better. My challenge is whether it is $170 better.

Not surprising, as new production units come with the fix incorporated and have so for several weeks now.

True, but when considering where the thread has been posted that's not really surprising really.

Probably not. As far as I am aware the 100MHz variants are for the Chinese market only, the western market will get the 200MHz variant (at least it's how it has been with the 2ch version).

We'll see when it's officially released outside China.

It's not just the display, the whole processing backend in the Siglent is faster, i.e. not as laggy as in the Rigol. Plus getting 1Mpts for FFTs is a huge step from the measly 16kpts of the Rigol.

That's probably not a scope, 'Siglent SDS1000X-LA' is the software option for the Logic Analysis package (i.e. it gives you the code to enable the MSO functionality, and also comes with the LA cable) for SDS1kX scopes.

It's probably just a vendor of being sloppy with the item description.

Circuit Specialist also lists it as software option:

There are 2 models the SDS1104X-E and SDS1204X-E. Difference is 100 vs 200 MHz. The 100 doesn't look to be easily upgradeable to 200 (According to Dave Jones' teardown, the DACs are an issue).

The SDS1104X-E is priced at $499 USD and the SDS1204X-E at $649.

But, neither appear to be available yet, even though announced several weeks or so ago. At least none of the suppliers linked to off the Siglent America "how to buy" page list either scope. Amazon lists the SDS1104X-E but out of stock. And I'll pass on Amazon because they charge me WA sales tax which makes it $550. No listing for the SDS1204X-E.

So I finally got my Amazon gift cards in. Order the Siglent now or wait a few more days for possible Christmas sales on Amazon? Will there be such a thing or something like this?
