I see once again a failed up update my thread
Well, shortly after my last reply I decided to give it a go and add the IR sensor as I had nothing to loose... Well I was able to reinstall it and it is working.

For future reference, If you ever want to try this idea again, place 100 nF capacitor between the GND and Vcc terminals right at the sensor.
This would improve the chances of it working correctly.

Obviously, the soldering must be done very carefully.
