Hi, I'm new here and relatively new to electronics - to the analogue side at least.

I am building a Frequency Counter/Crystal Tester kit
( one of these: http://www.dx.com/p/diy-frequency-t...unter-meter-w-housing-kit-443430#.WcZIydhw1hE )

The instructions call for installing two S8550 transistors, but the parts supplied are S8050 transistors.

Looking at the specifications, these transistors have similar parameters except that the S8050 values are all negative.
Are these two actually compatible?

If not, is there any way I can tell if the component list is wrong, or the wrong parts have been supplied?

TIA, Mike

The S8050 is NPN while the S8550 is PNP so they are not interchangeable.
It is most likely that you have been supplied the correct parts but without seeing a schematic it is impossible to say.

Hi thanks for the replies.
I'd just worked out the NPN/PNP difference - because my 'Component Tester' told me

Looking at the (very poor and very feint) circuit diagram, I can just see the the Arrow on the Emitter is pointing Out of the transistor. That makes it an NPN device?

Also on the circuit, the Emitters are in one case direct to Ground, in the other case, via a resistor (10k) to ground.

Does that confirm that the parts list is wrong and the correct part has been supplied?
