Toaster solenoid not holding (2)

Toaster solenoid problem here too. When I press the lever down and the solenoid is energized, it vibrates at a 60 cycle frequency. I know that solenoids require DC. Does that mean that the zener diode on my toaster is gone? It is only 50 years old, but one of those chrome GE classics. I really want to fix it. Thanks.

There is no diode in the toaster.
Check all the electrical connections and rivets feeding the solenoid for poor contact.

Typically, for the coil to hold, the attracted metallic part must make intimate contact with the armature. In toasters, crumbs will build up and interfere with that attraction. A good cleaning is often all that is required. Do check the switch itself for contamination.

Is it open frame relay or sealed cube type?
If older open style version, is the copper shading ring intact ? or worn through?
Oops, I see it is a solenoid, but the shading ring still applies, if AC
