Choose your hiking partners carefully...

Yes, sometimes if there are 2 people in a group, you would administer first aid, make shelter and may have to leave injured person behind to go get help, but this was no the case... Pathetic. She was lucky there were other people there, it is getting cold at night.
I guess those idiots though they owed their hiking partner no loyalty due to the nature of their "friendship"

A search manager later had a “long chat” with the original hiking group, which had met through an online meet-up website or app,

It is a brave new world of global connections. Make new friends and dump them if they do not suit you. No need to commit to anything. There will always be another bandwagon to jump on.

https://www.theglobeandmail.com/can...-to-ban-popular-bilingual-greeting-bonjourhi/
François Legault’s government is looking for a way to ban "bonjour/hi,” a bilingual greeting many shopkeepers and receptionists have adopted in Montreal to the great irritation of some Quebec nationalists.

The Premier’s right-hand man on Quebec identity files, Minister of Immigration, Francization and Integration Simon Jolin-Barrette, revealed his intention to crack down on the expression on Friday, about a month after he became the minister in charge of protecting the French language.
In 2013, the province gained global attention over so-called “pastagate,” when OQLF language inspectors instructed an Italian restaurant to use French words instead of “pasta” and other items on its menu. After weeks of ridicule, the OQLF’s director resigned and the agency slightly softened its inspection regime.

The really funny thing is the Francois ridicule the Quebecois over their "bastardized" version of the French language. It's about as French as American English is to the King's English

Hey! My French Canadian wife is looking over my shoulder! :(

The 'fact' is you cannot legislate Culture!
Quebec has had its ups and downs for sovereignty etc, since the British became the controlling force in Canada.
I came to Canada during the crisis caused by Front de libération du Québec (FLQ), a militant organization which perpetrated a bombing and armed robbery campaign from 1963 to 1970, culminating in the October Crisis and the death of Deputy Premier Pierre Laporte. Since this time all mainstream sovereignist groups have sworn off violence, while extremist nationalist groups, though in the minority, support violent actions in the name of liberating Quebec from Canadian sovereignty.
I think that is the only time Canada has sent in the Canadian Army militia when they put down the FLQ.
On reading the history of Quebec, it is obvious that because the catholic priests had strong local political control and insisted on communication in French only, it was because of a fear of the French culture being polluted by association with the protestant British, if the French population was kept fluent in French only, isolation could be possibly maintained .

Living in ME we were taught Quebecois "French" in grammar school by French Canadians. There were 2 very large Catholic Curches in town, Irish Catholic and the French Catholic, each with their own parochial schools. Their parishioners were each about 1/3 of the town's population with a real hodgepodge of cultures and religions making up the rest. It was a real learning experience for this "southern" boy and we took a LOT of ribbing and ridicule for our strange accents. When I tried to take French in high school back in TN the teacher and I did not get along at all because she did not like for me to tell her that her pronunciation that she had learned in a Tennessee College was all wrong! Ah well, live and learn...

I am aware of the reason for diplomatic immunity, but should it extend to diplomats and partners that commit a domestic offense in the country they are posted to.
But should they essentially get off Scott free for a crime like this?
I can imagine the reverse scenario, a British diplomat killing a US youth this way and the uproar.

The UK will personally appeal to Donald Trump if the US continues to refuse to lift the diplomatic immunity it has granted to a US diplomat’s wife who is accused of killing a 19-year-old motorcyclist in a traffic collision.
Anne Sacoolas, who is married to a US communications official, left the UK last month, prompting widespread anger in Britain over the use of diplomatic immunity to flee potential charges of causing death by dangerous driving.

Amid signs that No 10 has been caught off-guard by the level of public outrage, the foreign secretary, Dominic Raab, raised the case in a telephone call with the US secretary of state, Mike Pompeo. A spokesman said Raab “reiterated his disappointment” with the US decision not to waive immunity and urged them to reconsider.
No 10 said that if Pompeo was not persuaded to take action, then the prime minister would himself raise the issue directly with Trump.

Sacoolas left the UK along with her husband Jonathan at the beginning of last month, days after Harry Dunn was killed in a head-on collision with a car that police believe had been driving on the wrong side of the road for 400 yards.!!
And she admitted she was in the wrong!

Typically communications officials don't have classic get away with murder diplomatic immunity. Most are covered under a different convention like the Status of Forces military agreements.

This was my understanding of immunity gained from a briefing long ago. If the host country decides (or is forcefully pushed) to grant full diplomatic immunity that's great for the escapee but don't expect it to happen in every case if the host country really wants to stick it to you. What a mess.:(

https://www.theguardian.com/politic...urges-us-to-reconsider-anne-sacoolas-immunity
But Mark Stephens, an acknowledged legal expert on diplomatic immunity law, challenged whether Jonathan Sacoolas enjoyed full immunity under the Vienna convention, saying he had not been registered as such with the Foreign Office.

He suggested Sacoolas and his dependents instead only had more limited immunity under the Visiting Forces Act, and its derivative bilateral orders that provide immunity to personnel on specific UK bases. That immunity, according to Crown Prosecution Service guidance, is restricted to specific offences that “arose out of and in the course of the service person’s duties as a member of the visiting force including whether the act occurred in the course of the individual’s professional duties”.
What a limited immunity passport stamp looks like.

Very sorry to see our (Kurdish) friends being betrayed and abandoned and left to their own devices.
You just don't do that, in my opinion.
Disgusting.
How many times is it now?

If you think the Kurds are surprised about the current state of events then you must think they are ignorant savages. They know the real politick of their situation. US decides between an Islamic NATO Ally with nuclear weapons bases vs Syrian and Turkish rebels. If the Kurdish didn't take the time and effort to prepare for this day then they are fools.

The first lights clicked off before dawn.

Unprecedented power outages swept across a large swath of Northern California on Wednesday, with more shut-offs looming for hundreds of thousands of Bay Area residents as evening approached.

They could last for days and affect 2.4 million people.
...
“They are in bankruptcy because of their terrible management going back decades,” he said at a bill signing Wednesday. “They’ve created these conditions.”
Somehow Oregon manages to run power lines into the woods without this problem.

Does cutting trees for a clear cut under power lines in California cause cancer in California?
