Hard to get away with these days with all the satellites sending back pictures of their "High Technology" blowing up or falling down...

True ... whatever happened to Russia's ultra high tech hypersonic missiles? ... didn't they jail some of their scientists for fraud?

Or when they post propaganda that their technology is superior albeit faked and technologically flawed.
The problem with current Chinese technology is standards and responsibility. People trash Boeing but with Boeing you can sue, take them to court and make them responsible to shareholders. With a Chinese airplane, it's a total Pig in a Poke of legal and financial recourse completely controlled by the CCP.

This is silly.

Engineering is, literally, applied science.

Not only am I an engineer, but I am an inventor as well. I use science everyday as a matter of course in my professional life to create and build things that have never been created, or built, before.
You're just a skillful technician. :D

Very interesting recent 60min TV interview with Geoffrey Hinton (a descendant of Gorge Boole, BTW) on the subject of A.I.
And his prediction that if steps are not taken to counter it, machines, and the rapid ability to self teach/correct their actions, could possible end up taking over our lives, and under their control, , impossible as it may seem, I tend to agree with him, especially as he pointed out , if the issue is neglected, !
I know a lot of people are going to poo-poo it, but I could see it happening.
A similar thing to what happened with the inception of the internet, no-one saw the requirement to apply controls and it rapidly became the wild west.

The current autocomplete LLM won't but maybe some future AGI will be. If it does, the main use will be porn, just like the Internet.

You may be an engineer and inventor but you're certainly not a logician.

If you disagree with something @Lo_volt wrote then say what that is, don't just label his entire post "silly". Are we to take it that you disagree with everything he wrote? I doubt it, so try actually stating what it is exactly that you disagree with, it's a far better use of your time.

It's clear to anyone with an open rational mind that humanity is doomed. All the significant metrics when extrapolated, lead to a disaster.

Pollution, population increase, increasingly unstable weather, nuclear weapons, pandemics, depleting natural resources and of course wars. So the "AI" hype (it isn't even AI in the classic sense of the term) is just another way in which humanity is making the world less livable, less safe for the future generations and I fear that this is inevitable, self destruction is inevitable unless something extraordinary were to happen.

When I was younger starting in my teens I was wide eyed about "progress" I lapped up science and science fiction with the latter being exciting and optimistic with space travel, new inventions and so on.

Then years later I realized that such fiction made a huge assumption that I can now see was invalid, it assumes the humanity in the future is largely the same as it was at that time, 50s, 60s 70s.

Sadly humanity is rapidly degrading where the unthinkable is now commonplace.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao's home raided by FBI agents
The raids come two days after the Alameda County Registrar of Voters announced there were enough signatures on a petition to recall Thao from office to move the process forward.

Supporters of a recall blame the mayor for not doing enough to fight crime which has led many businesses to close down in the city. They also blame Thao for the city's failure to apply for millions of dollars in state money to fight retail crime.

Thao was also criticized for firing former police chief LeRonne Armstrong and not hiring a replacement for more than a year.
