Mom used to tell me, "Joey, clean your plate. There are poor children starving in China."

I'd say, "Yeah? Name three of them."
I hated it when someone tried to stuff your face using a very misplaced and manipulative sense of guilt... my mom never did that (though my grandma and an aunt did) ... what my mom did tell me was "Serve yourself only what you're going to eat, there should be no leftovers in your plate". There's a huge difference between a plate you serve for yourself and a plate served by someone else. That taught me moderation and control.

There's a huge difference between a plate you serve for yourself and a plate served by someone else. That taught me moderation and control.
I grew up with 4 brothers and usually one or more of our friends were in the house at dinner time so each meal was more like a feeding frenzy - I can't remember a meal where we had leftovers. It was more like complaints that there wasn't enough.
