So there are two ships with the same name, Nosmo King. We create 2 contacts in the system, Nosmo King 1 and Nosmo King 2. Going into the middle of the watch, this whole thing happens again, Nosmo King 3. By the end of the watch, there are 5 Nosmo Kings.

This is what he was seeing through the scope. Just being a jackass. When we turned the watch over to the next duty section, they had hell figuring that mess out.
Hilarious!!

Ah...my tax dollars at work. :D

So that's what the armed forces do...sneak around spying on legitimate citizens going about their legitimate business and play at calculating how to shoot them. As a legitimate citizen, I appreciate that about as much as a prison rape gang. Thank you for your service.
We weren't there to spy on merchants; we were there to spy on country X's submarines. Tracking merchants is just something we had to do to prevent being hit by one. We call everything a "solution;" in movies you'll hear it called a "firing solution." I guess some people in the submarine force also call it that, but regardless, there is no distinction between a fire control solution with intent to fire and a fire control solution with the intent of collision avoidance. A solution is simply the mathematical best estimate of any contact's position, course, and speed, and to not strive to have the best possible solution on every contact in your sphere of observation is to be remiss and invite calamity on yourself.

Now IMO just because we were there to track Country X's subs doesn't make the mission incredibly more profound than tracking innocent civilians. I myself felt it was largely a waste of time and money. Like a bored ninja with nothing better to than spend his time stalking a toddler from the shadows, always poised to strike, but never doing so.

They have a couple of old 2nd or 3rd hand Russian Kilo class subs and a handful of Chinese mini-subs; none of which have long rang missile (or any missile) capability; all of which are in terrible disrepair, are crewed by imbeciles, can't figure out how to encrypt their comms, and regularly have to be towed back to port. We saw (or heard) it all, from a few hundred or thousand meters away. At times it was entertaining, but mostly I was wondering why I was there, and who I was protecting from what danger.

There's a reason I'm not still on a submarine ;)

Check PM for a personal apology.

It goes something like this: "Sorry for the personal insult, but I sincerely disagree with how our government operates".

Sorry. My bad.
I'm pretty tight with strantor so I took a shot at him. Calling his job inappropriate, kind of like calling his sister ugly. :D

This morning I was in luck and was able to buy two boxes of Tooheys New for a good deal at the local bottle -o.
I placed the boxes of goodness on the front seat and headed back home. I stopped at a servo to fill up my ute where a drop-dead gorgeous blonde in a short skirt was filling up her car at the next pump.

She glanced at the two boxes of ammo, bent over and leaned in my passenger window, and said in a sexy voice, "I'm a big believer in barter handsome. Would you be interested in trading sex for beer?" ...

I thought for a few seconds and asked, "What kind of beer 'ya got?"

I was 22 when my cousin put the move on me. I drove the truck right off the road! :D

and, no. All I did was get out and push while she tried to drive it out of the mud.

Actually that's a very good way to maintain readiness. People get "used" to situations.

No matter how relaxed or stressful the situation, people have a tendency to become complacent. By mixing up, an already stressful situation with a little more stress, everyone automatically prepares for the unexpected. And 'that' is a very good condition for our military personnel to be in.

Just my two cents.

What? Kissing your cousin while plotting, "solutions" for cargo ships? :D

No, throwing in absurd labels for the "targets".
I can understand plotting the movements of everything that might collide with you. Good practice in case you ever have to shoot somebody. Thanks for the education, strantor.
