The Dog That Never Barks

Hello there,

I was tempted to put this into that "pets" thread but this is a little different.

One of my neighbors has a dog that is part pit bull. He's the most relaxed dog I've ever encountered. The most extraordinary thing about him is, he never, ever, barks.
That's anytime anywhere, under any conditions. Even if he spots a cat walking around he never barks. His owner can stick his finger in his ears and he doesn't even seem to mind (of course not hard enough to hurt the doggie).

What would be a possible reason for this? Could it be simply that he was a service dog before they got him?
Note that he does not even attempt to bark so I do not think it is a medical problem, although not completely sure about that.

Most likely training, but could just be that dog's temperament.

I had a dog that barked like crazy. I got one of those anti-bark shock collars and put on her. She barked and yelped. Barked again and yelped. Never barked again except in extremely rare, and reasonable circumstances. One the one hand, I felt annoyed because that collar wasn't cheap and she only wore it for a few minutes. On the other hand, it was money well spent, since I was living in a townhome at the time (until I bought a house, specifically so that that dog would have a big yard to run around in).

This was a strange dog is several ways -- but extremely smart (unlike the two idiots we have now). She loved to savor her food, so if you gave her a piece of meat, she would lay down with it between her front legs for several minutes before taking a bite. You could take it right out of her mouth, and she didn't care. But if you gave her a tomato, she snarfed those up immediately and you did NOT try to take that away from her. Same with pig ears, but at least that makes sense. Any other food, she didn't care.

I have a friend who has a neighbor with a small yappy dog that is very noisy and the owner just swears at him when he complains.

Two days ago I watched a video explaining that a specific breed (maybe the "afgan something") is unable to bark but emitting a short yelp because its vocal cords are too short (or it was too tight?).

Edit: Thanks Ya'akov

Hi,

Wow, I wonder if the previous owners used one of those collars. In all the time I have spent with that dog in the place in which it lives, I have never heard it bark even once, and I have spent many hours visiting the neighbors as we had dinner several times and watched movies together on their big screen TV (haha).
The dog loves treats and chew toys that squeak when they are bitten.
It's quite an amazing dog.

Hi,

When I visited my friend in Los Angeles I partly took care of a bigger dog and a very small dog and the very small dog had a loud, sharp bark. They can be very noisy and irritating.
Lucky she didn't bark too much.
The bigger dog had a very loud, deep bark, and would bark at any of the neighbors walking by the house. That was irritating too, but he stopped after they got past the house.

Hi,

Oh yeah I read about that breed. This one is not of that breed though so it must be training, unless the larynx is bad or something, i guess.
The thing that struck me the most was that I had never encountered a dog that did not bark before this. I thought it was the nature of all dogs to bark. I didn't realize that training could change that either.

He is loved by everyone who meets up with him, even the mailpersons that bring him treats too.

The subtleties of language ... down here we don't have a word for "breed"
Hi,

Then just use the word "breed" (joking).

To be a little more serious, I do see other languages using the English word in their sentences when they don't have that word in their natural language. To a person that cannot read the other language, it would look something like this:
" #*@ $*#( #$&&#& breed $*#&$*)_()$# *% "
Only the word "breed" would be readable except to the original language speaker/writer.
To the person who does read that language it might look like this:
"I do not know what the word breed means maybe you do".

There are few local idioms and slangs about dogs and all of them calim negative burden,
when you say something is "Dog eaten" or eaten by dogs means it has become useless and misused without any responsibility.
other one says "The yellow dog is the hyaena/jackal's pal/brother" that may be fit well to nowadays yellow medias.
"even dog doesn't know its owner" means everything is gone with endless chaos.
ehh...our history is full of resistance and revelotion against militarism...and think our map is an icon of a cat.
guess how much we should feel sad about militarism that rules over stuffs...
so any barkless stuff is welcome an will be paid :--"

Hi,

What do you mean by "will be paid", and what is that symbol supposed to be right after it ":--"

Or as Gomez Addams told Pugsley "Why do you want a puppy? All it's going to do is grow up to be a dog!" I'm sure the writers stole the line from Ogden...
