Water cooling for a graphic card?

 

Don't like to brag but it is my handy work. Goes way back about 4 years I think.
I took out the Extremely large heat sink which was like 1" thick.

I figured I could make water cooling. So after detaching the sink from the card. I heated with a blow torch. The fins came out pretty nicely, leaving the Base plate only which is only a cm or so thick.

Originally the GT8800 Generates lots of heat and when you a play something like far cry the card can bake an omelet. Which lead me to do what I did. I just use copper piping and some copper clads and lots of solder.

First I made the pipe which is nicely coiled in to to the base die-cast. The Pipping carries water with provision to joint hoses with interconnects. The pipes are soldered same way as the fins were. Just heat it with a blow torch and melt the solder using flux. Lots and lots of solder were used to for a proper bond. The vacant areas were filled with copper cutting, they were soldered around too.

The final result were a very thin GT8800. The card ran at 35°C at the most extreme. A very good improvement and one fine job for a first time.
This card gave a descent years of service to it's owner.

It came back just recently. The CPU water block cracked leaking coolant on to the card which jumbled the image . The CPU block was a Thermaltake one. I think it cracked due to long usage. The mother board and the rest inside the casing was just like new. Which results in having no fan inside the casing. Just a little bit of dust for something in use nonstop for years in this environment.

So now the card is washed and let to dry out with the board. Since I don't have a way of baking them, I let the boards dry out for days.

I think I can still revive them but the owner now wants another bad ass one. So I recommended the AMD Phenom II X6 and the Asus Cross-hair formula board with an ATI HD6970 VGA card. I might be leaving for bankok very soon to buy the stuff.
I will water cool this board completely together with the card. Count on it.

I'm gonna partition the SSDs and put XP on here too, so I can play some games. I'll probably use the HDD for some additional game storage in case I fill up the SSDs.

 

Wooooooooot!! I should get an SSD for the primary drive.

 

I might be tempted to switch to SSD if I wasn't worried aboud compatability issues with my laptop. Some friends have them and say they love them. One dosen't have a single moving part in his computer at all except for when the fan kicks in.

Not really worth it for the cost, to be honest. These drives were free. Retail they are about £180 each. Is it worth it for 5 seconds less boot up time, and slightly faster programs? Probably not.

Do you do enough of it to matter? A 7200 RPM or even a 10kRPM SATA drive will be good for most people. The main issue is sequential read rate. I get 110 MB/s from the HDD in my set up. Unless you're working with uncompressed 1080p HD, then I wouldn't worry (uncompressed 1080p would require a little over 180 MB/s.) SSDs are great for loading applications and booting the system, because that involves loading many files located in various places around the disk - in a conventional HDD this means the head has to move to read the data, while an SSD doesn't have a head and will have a fixed seek time (in my case, about 0.3ms, my HDD does about 18ms.)

Your bats are massive compared to ours. I think all of ours are less than 30cm wingspan but your Indian Flying Fox is up to 1.5m wingspan. Must be quite a sight.
