They’re thinking they’ll get at least 300,000 miles out of them. A much smaller issue than I thought.

 

One major problem is disposing of worn out batteries.

Are these batteries going to be adding to the "e-waste" stream or are they going to be shipped over to China? Conventional gas powered cars don't have as much e-waste. I am not using this idea for -or against- battery powered cars, just making an observation.

Guess your ideas of housing cost for you are blinding you to the real world.

Batteries are rebuilt. While not your scary "E WASTE", ICE cars produce many bad things in the waste stream today. The days of a wrecking yard just pouring fluids on the ground are over. All of the fluids are supposed to be collected and disposed of today, many small mom and pop places don't but the bigger more monitored place are made to, or face big fines.

It really isn't that hard to see through to your real reason for being against this whole thing. It costs more to live where you want, at the price you want and you don't work for the companies making it that way. When you finally own up to that, the whole problem is less of a problem.

The same thing your railing about today, government stepping in to get the future started happened in your great grandfathers time. But then when was the last time you saw a buggy whip?

They certain were in the past, but like many things of this type, the cost has been coming down quickly and that will probably continue for some time. A decade ago batteries cost about $1000/kWh (so $15k to $30k for many vehicles) and that price is now down to under $200/kWh and is expected to be cut in half or even a third over the next decade. Battery lifetimes have also been going up. Many manufacturers now offer 10 year/100,000 mile battery warranties. So we are approaching the point where battery replacement is in the ballpark of the cost and time frame of engine replacement and will likely be solidly in that realm in the next five to ten years.

 

Tesla is, internally, designing their cars to last a million miles. All parts and designs are chosen to meet that goal. Battery packs probably aren't there quite yet, but will be by the time that EVs have made significant market penetration in the next decade. Fleet operators will be ecstatic to have low-maintenance cars that last 'forever', and consumers will follow.

I see a situation that maybe some haven't commented on, when it comes to battery replacement it's very likely someone might want an upgrade much like they do with over milage engines in Japan. Those are resold in other countries and re-installed to run longer. So people without a lot of money benefit from used vehicles and batteries.

I also think they should design the chassis to be removable or at the very least drop the battery at the charging station while autonomous robot un-installs and re-installed.

Musk is currently in hot water with the SEC for tweeting some anticipated production figures then revising. SEC has asked the court to consider him in contempt of the consent decree. That's a bad thing. But..

I personally think he's also going to get smacked for basically telling ARK Investments on a podcast (they say stock going to $4K) that Full Self Driving is in the bag by the end of year.

Seriously, I sometimes adore the guy, other times want someone to tighten his straps. Inviting SEC enforcement action never goes well for the corporation. Running Tesla at $50B valuation means that lots of heavy hitters are paying attention. He needs to focus on building automobiles which in fact is what Tesla, despite the protestations of the 'its a tech company' crowd, really is. Margins, quality, customer satisfaction, realistic goals really matters. Elon does not seem to get that and I fear it will be the end of him and maybe Tesla itself. I don't want that to happen but we need adults in the room..

Just read that Apple has laid off most of the engineers inProjectTitan, their autonomous car unit. The long rumored ‘Apple buys Tesla? ‘ Say it ain’t so...

Seriously. That would be nuts.. but fun to watch.

 

Apple stupidity after the death of their fearless leader, rumor has it they will walk away from Intel processors which will summon me to purchase non apple products or keep my old machines. If they don't have an answer for X86 to do the heavy lifting I think they will die a slow death or be forever maimed. Maybe musk could save them.

Anyway, they announced the long awaited $35K Model 3. Should bump some demand - hopefully margins are there.
Post-market stock dropped.. Maybe others share the same concern on margins and cannibalizing orders for higher priced ones..
