Hi guys

I am working on a project which needs a GSP module power by a small battery (eg CR2032 or something like that), does anyone come across a open source bird gps tracking project that I can learn from? Mainly what's the battery life I can expect from a CR2032 etc...

Thanks guys.

The battery on my phone dies about 2x faster with the GPS on. That is a much bigger battery than a 2032 so I'm guessing that your littble button battery will be dead in less than 20 minutes of on continuously.

One way to extend is to keep gps off and turn on just long enough to receive signal, and capture position. Then go to sleep again for 1 second, 3 seconds, 10 seconds or what ever.

From what little I have read on the subject the birds carry beacons which are tracked by triangulation or signals received by satellites or ground stations rather than GPS trackers.

Whether you need a GPS tracker or merely a transmitter, the lower percentage of time you have the thing operating the longer the battery will last.

All my experiences tell me that GPS modules are major battery hogs. My gut feeling is that you'll be hard pressed to run it on a 2032 at all. I agree with previous posts that your only real hope for energy savings is to have the GPS off (or asleep, standby, etc.) most of the time and only turn it on briefly for new position acquisitions.
