I would to ask if the SMD(Surface Mountain Device) Resistor is linear or non-linear and why?

Thick film versions are made of Ruthenium oxide, and are not quite so linear, about 20ppm non-linearity.

That is just plain silly. SMD resistors are not in the same category as the others labeled no non-linear.

 

Very silly. The average thick-film SMD resistor is made of the same stuff as a “metal oxide” resistor - ruthenium oxide. They are identical apart from the connections.

You would avoid them (both SMD thick film and leaded metal oxide) for very high end audio, but they are plenty good enough for most applications.

That just provides further evidence that you can't believe everything that's on the internet. Anyone who knew anything would know that there's nothing non-linear about an SMD resistor just because it's in a different package.

I was looking for information on how to repair and replace unloader valves in pressure washers yesterday. I came across one made by an idiot who was using a pair of pliers to remove it. Even I knew prying it out with a screwdriver was the preferred method. He even learned that before he posted the video, but he posted it with his ham-handed attempts to get it out with pliers anyway. It was a 6 minute video that could have been covered in a couple minutes; I kept skipping forward to see if he had any jewels of wisdom. He didn't.

There is some good information on the internet and there's even more bad information because it's not always a peer reviewed source of information, or misinformation, as the case may be... As with all sources of information, you need to use your knowledge and common sense to vet it.

There are not only linear resistors in SMD.
There are also PTC and NTC resistors available in SMD.
The PTC is many times used as a resettable fuse. They are also called polyfuses.
The NTC is many times used for temperature monitoring.

That reminded me of an error I found in the 1981 National Semiconductor Databook:

The draftsperson drew the arrow on the N channel MOSFET backwards. On the same page, it was drawn correctly for the CD4044.
