I ran across this video today, and it gave me an idea:

Everybody post a photo of their high school wood shop chess board.

I'll start:

I built this board almost 30 years ago, when I had just gotten married and my first professional project was the design and fabrication of a CNC router (hardware, software, electronics interface and all). I designed the pieces in AutoCAD, and then specially fabricated the base material using 5 layers of maple wood root (we call it bird's-eye maple) laminate. Then I cut each piece, and meticulously sanded them and glued them together one by one. After that, I applied a little stain to the finished pieces to make them look like old wood and finally air brushed them with matte lacquer and finished by polishing each piece by hand ... My wife almost divorced me for the (in her view) excessive attention I was putting to the project.

I only built the pieces, by the way. I bought the leather-covered board separately while on a trip to Paris back in 94.

I remember keeping warm next to one of those.

The stove was Red Hot, so your body would melt in the front and still be freezing on the back-side.
