Simple amplifier

L R

F R

4 speakers can still be 2 or 2.1 Typical for a car, but not exactly encoded and it's likely L R + a subwoofer.

To upconvert from real 2.1 to 5.1 seems to be a bit harder.

I, myself, would like to upconvert analog L R to AC3-Audio only via HDMI. Google wasn't too helpfull. Kodi came up as a possible platform.

What is the source of the sound?

What is the 2.1 setup you have now?
Sound from pc?
Sound from audio device like receiver/player?

5.1 sound is encoded into some digital sound sources, such as Blu Ray movies and some audio CDs.
T0 get that sound you must have a digital decoder that recovers the sound into the separate 5 analog channels plus subwoofer.

If all you have is 2.1 analog signals, they can't be converted to 5.1.

That discontinued product derives an emulated 5.1 from 2.1 which is not the same as true 5.1.
But it may be better than just 2.1.
"Better" is so subjective. I'll take real stereo over phasey, comb-filtered, emulated 5.1 any day! I'm sure they're not all as bad as ones I've heard, but I'm still skeptical!
