Hi,
Could someone tell me, is there an ic for high current cut-off,
I need to set up a circuit that once a short occurs a relay would be triggered, a basic safety device.

So could someone recommend a possible ic or components?

Sure
You could set up an op amp to monitor a setpoint voltagage to drive a relay to switch on when the setpoint is being exceeded.Whats your power supply?

 

The power supply 12v, will op amp ic's take that?

To shut down when 'high current' ... 1 Ampere, at 12 Volts

The shut down part can be either a fuse or a circuit breaker. And energize the relay when that happens ?

Try

+12V-----------fuse----------circuit---------ground

And install a 12V relay in parallel to the fuse.

Ok 12 @ 1amp.Would you look at the following file.I short give us some ideas.This is a current foldback circuit.It will shut down the supply when
the trip voltage adjusted by R4.So I think you can see you can adapt very few parts from this to protect your circuit.You could replace the lamp with a relay,etc.Also do you have parts on hand?You can always build this circuit with a simulator to work all the "bugs" out.I like this approcah best cuz if you make a mistake there is no smoke.One i like is "tina"
