Hello,

Translated from a dutch news site:

Court rules many of Trump's trade tariffs illegal

A US court has ruled that most of President Donald Trump's import tariffs are illegal. The appeals court's decision is seen as a major blow to Trump's trade policy.

These tariffs concern the 10 percent base tariff that Trump imposed on almost all countries, plus higher "reciprocal" tariffs on dozens of trading partners. They also include separate tariffs on products from Canada, Mexico, and China. Trump argued that these countries should have done more to combat fentanyl trafficking and illegal immigration.

The judges rejected Trump's explanation that he was permitted to take these measures under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act. This 1977 law allows the president to take economic measures if there is an unusual and extraordinary threat to the US.

'Contrary to law'

But according to the judges, who ruled 7-4, Trump did so "contrary to law." The president declared a national emergency, saying that unfair trade harms US security. However, the court ruled that imposing tariffs is not the presidency, but the prerogative of Congress.

A New York court had previously ruled that the tariffs were illegal. The International Trade and Industry Court blocked the president's import duties last May. The lawsuit was filed by five small businesses that import goods from countries affected by the tariffs. Other lawsuits challenging Trump's decision are also pending.

The court has now overturned the lower court's injunction that completely halted the tariffs and ordered a review of the appropriateness of such a blanket ban.

The tariffs, which the court ruled illegal, will not be immediately halted by the ruling. The ruling will not take effect until October, giving the Trump administration time to take the case to the Supreme Court.

In a message on Truth Social, Trump strongly criticized the ruling, calling the appeals court "highly biased." "If this decision stands, it will literally destroy the United States of America," he wrote. The president emphasized that the tariffs will remain in place for the time being.

US Correspondent Sjoerd den Daas:

"Chaos was already brewing for companies both inside and outside the US, with the massive patchwork of import tariffs rolled out by Trump in recent months. There was no predictability. Tariffs were repeatedly raised, or, where Trump was willing to make trade deals, lowered again. This ruling will not remove these uncertainties for the time being; quite the opposite. Trump's tariffs, for whom this is a significant blow, will remain in effect at least until mid-October to give him time to challenge the decision and his administration the opportunity to appeal.

Should Washington ultimately fail in the Supreme Court, the government risks having to repay hundreds of billions of dollars. Tariffs are the foundation of Trump's economic and foreign policy; he frequently uses them as a stick to pressure countries on other issues."

That's not a believable motive.

Some things just can't be made in America; like coffee or Japanese trading cards/games.

The tariffs on American automobiles being partially assembled in Canada and Mexico hurts Canadians, Mexicans, and Americans.

In some cases, US made things just cost more than most Americans are willing to pay. The sellers who tried it found out the hard way.

An appeals court just upheld a lower court ruling that the tariffs were illegal. Now the case will go to the Supreme Court.
Thank you

There are several US "news" outlets that are just pushers of propaganda. I consider C*N mainstream, but they seem to get a lot of details wrong. It seems there aren't any editors for online content. It's best if you get your news from multiple sources, but not the likes of F* News, FB, et. al. The vast majority of anything directly from the US government is BS.

Shame on FedEx ... I seldom have a problem like that, but it does happen.
I knew it was bad when the truck stopped for a few seconds at the house for delivery but then took-off. It was dropped off the next day after they, 'repaired' the box with tape.

We sent a Harry & David gift basket of fruit and chocolates to my sister by UPS.

We received a report that it had been "destroyed" in shipment and was being returned to us. A mangled box, complete with a tire track across it was returned.

Somehow, all of the decaying fruit was still in the box. But there was no evidence of the chocolates that box had once contained. Hmmm. I support they were thrown clear by the tire impact.

Finally received my replacement panels. None were broken this time but the box was ripped. Testing those two with the dinged panel in a series string before mounting. Looking good on a day without much sunshine.
