I think that the gate is reverse biased with respect to the anode, even when the SCR is on. If you have a very fast risetime gate drive pulse that is not current limited (doesn't have a series resistor) then that could get you very large gate current spikes. Can't think of any other explanation, which doesn't mean that no other explanation exists.
