I am currently using the 16 pin dip version of the ST232. All I use this for is the voltage doubler section that gives me a +10 volt and -10 volt output. I am currently using a 7805 5v regulator to power the chip.
I am looking to replace the ST232, due to space constraints I need something that requires few support components. I have looked at a few doublers but it requires one for the + side and one for the - side and takes up just as much space.
Can anyone recommend something?
I am also open to suggestion on replacing the 7805, as I don't need a 1 amp supply 300 to 500 ma would be sufficient. Would a 5v Zener give me suitable regulation to power the ST232 or it's replacement?
Input voltage is 11 to 14.5 volts
Edit
I have looked at the surface mount versions of both the ST and the 7805, however the footprint for the 7805 takes just as much space as the TO-220 does. The ST I think is workable.
