This regex, along with quite a few other unlikely ones, have been fodder for talks in the Perl universe… forever. It turns out that regex as implemented in Perl is Turing complete, so these things are not surprising, just generally baffling if you don‘t grok the operation of the Regexp Engine.

The true monster of the legendary regex world is this one, for email address validation. (ProTip: DO NOT USE THIS IT IS REALLY STUPID) On the other hand, this does actually accept all valid RFC 5322 addresses, something most email validators fail at.

The rule is: if you need a parser don’t use a regex. Parsers benefit from regex as part of them, but they don’t rely on them for state information.

 

I've seen the mail example. A true beast. The other problem is security. Some regex corner case code patterns be made into DoS attacks (takes a very long time to evaluate) and other insecurities.
