The old rack mount digital volt meters had a Reference input, is there a way to modify a DVM handheld meter to get a reference input? The reference input is used to compared a reference waveform with the measured waveform for phase errors or polarity of the AC waveform

Or I can use the Reference input for a sync frequency reference signal
