I would like to build a quality AM/FM receiver using something like a TDA7088 or equivalent. I've already picked out a LM1310 decoder and TDA1554 audio amplifier but just can't seem to settle on what receiver chip to use. Anyone build a receiver lately and have suggestions?

Thanks for the reply. Well......as usual, I changed my mind on the TDA7000 series chips when I found that a Si4835 chip is available and has resistance manual tuning capabilities using a LOG pot. That was what I really was looking for when I started this project. Very little outside components and no decoder required. Almost a plug and play. I'm still going with the TDA1554Q 2X22W amp chip as I really don't need any loud blaring audio. I haven't been able to find this chip in a DIP pack so I guess it's gonna be me and my microscope battling to get the thing on a board.

If anyone has any info on a 12v to 3.3v DC/DC converter they'd like share, I'll be appreciative. I am going to need something stable/regulated for this chip as the radio is going in my car.

FM only, TDA7000. Quite some time ago.. yes..

This was the second attempt for prototype board. First one wasn't tight enough.

My AM radio was MK484 based:

I still do not have nylon standoffs for the ferrite rod.

I'm in Australia, our major hobby electronics retailer was Dick Smith Electronics,
but the chain was bought out, and they moved to retail appliances,
and stopped doing any hobby electronics at all.
When that happened I got this:

The AM radios were actually ALL ok, I just needed better antenna + TDAxxx amplifier.

You could harvest a chip from a broken radio.

 

How are you going to install your radio in the car? Please provide more detail.

I've gotten those boards from a U.S. supplier here. I assume they can ship to Australia, but I haven't checked.

 

Is it not thought that these will become obsolete?
Maybe the powers that be can't get away with just digital radio
due to reception threshold for digital.
