Proper connection of HC11 MPU?

It seems the HC11 may be a suitable 'replacement' MPU for my project, as they are still available to some degree.

I just want to see if I understand the connection diagram as presented in the data sheet, from the perspective of making an "adapter" to drop in where the old chip sat.

Going from the 6801/6803 instruction set to the 6809, I lose 20+ opcodes and would have to do a full rewrite of the code, and at that point I'd rather recode for the 6502 (which I am more familiar with and is still in production).

The 68008 seems to be too much chip for what I need, and again, the task of re-coding (when I still haven't untangled the core interrupt routine).

I looked around and I couldn't find any place still selling the DIP version of the 'HC11 MPU, but the PLCC version is somewhat available yet.
