There are no problems with special relativity and QM, that is all resolved in the standard model. There are problems making gravity (general relativity) and QM play together well. The result of that is that we cannot talk the very early stage of the big bang, or what goes at the singularity inside a black hole. For the rest of the universe, it works.

For the rest of the universe, it works.
It does???

Why do we need to introduce dark matter to make the universal gravitational constant fit the standard theory,
Dark energy to fit the measured average energy density in space,
Why have we not detected the expected neutrino flux?
Why how do we explain the difference between predicted and measured values of the cosmic background radiation?

There are many more anomalies, but I can't be bothered to list them all.

But this is getting further and further off topic.

Again just a dummy here, but I have a problem with stuff like the Higgs-Boson, and anything resulting from a 'collider'. If you can 'hit' anything hard enough, it's going to break. Hit a rock with a hammer, and you still have the same elements of the rock, just smaller parts. The idea that somebody came up with enough math to convince others that things keep changing to other things just by smashing them just seems like 'snake oil'.

A rotating electrical spring explains everything for me. With this device I can explain all force and the cause of it.

It does not bother me that I don't know why these springs came to be.

It does not bother me that I don't know when and where they come from.

I don't believe in the concept of randomness or probability. They exist in the mind only.

cbecket13,......how bout this.

Think of a signal capacitor as a one way "current to field to current" transducer.

The input plate is not self powered. To establish a field on the plate, we will have to put some charge there. This will take some time to establish this. This is why current leads voltage.

You need the current first to make the voltage. The capacitor does not have an established voltage like a power supply does. We need voltage to make the field.

As this delayed voltage builds up on the input plate......it shines a polarized field on the output plate. This field travels at the speed of light, times a fudge factor....the velocity factor, that factor depends on the media between the plates. This also causes a very very small delay. You can usually ignore this one.

The output plate is not self powered. However...it it powered by a field, not the accumulation of charge like the input plate.
The charge accumulation on the output plate follows the VOLTAGE accumulation on the INPUT plate. It follows at the speed of light times the velocity factor. The polarity is inverted.
Even though the voltage between the plates is inverted.......it's almost instantaneous.

Spheres are a special case when it comes the fields, because it’s the only close shape of an electric field. It's a whole subject by itself.

When it comes come understanding the mechanics of fundamental action, no one really knows down deep. You have to study the different theories and see what you are comfortable with. The particles that cause these fields have not been clearly defined as of yet.

I myself believe that particles are made of equal amounts of electric and magnetic, and therefore there are always equal amounts of electric and magnetic present.

There are many ways to look at electronic devices. According to modern science, devices actually do work in many different ways.......depend on where you are located and how you measure.

It can get complicated.
"Spheres are a special case when it comes the fields, because it’s the only close shape of an electric field. It's a whole subject by itself." Don't understand this. Very nice explanation otherwise though.

"a wild a$$ guess" is correct with some of the exotic theories of the universe but Quantum Mechanics has been around for a while because it works to predict outcomes to a extremely high precision in most cases just like the Newtonian Mechanics we normally see in our slow speed daily lives does. The big question that most people think scientists should answer is the fundamental 'why' question.

The Q.E.D. explanation is that charges are continuously sending out virtual photons, which tickle other charges and cause a force to be felt between the two charges. These virtual photons move at the speed of light. These cannot be real photons, because otherwise energy would be moving about. When it comes down to it, it all sounds like magic, but when you do the math, it all works out very well.

But as I understand it, this virtual particle world, (which I'm warning up to), is manifest in a real effect - the Lamb Shift.

Look up(Google) charged spheres. An interesting thing happens inside one.

Also...one charged sphere inside another one can do some interesting things. Look up(Google) and Youtube fusor.

Surely all concepts exist in the mind only, by definition.

But what does this have to do with capacitors?

Again if you wish to discuss this, and again it has some fascinating twists, let us do so in new thread.

And my poor vacuum capacitor and spherical plate capacitor continue to languish in neglect. They are like weight and age - nobody wants to talk about them.

Some physics PhD on another forum, I can't really remember where/when said he had absolutely no idea how to calculate capacitance in separated conductive spheres of unequal size and using separation. Is that true? Nobody knows how to do that? Is somebody, somewhere embarrassed about that?

I've seen dozens of websites that explain capacitor action as related to forces on charges in a material dielectric. What if the dielectric is a vacuum? Not such a great explanation then.

Yeah, the one-inside-the-other case is the one claimed to cancel all magnetic action (I think).

This one of the reasons that 'particles' IMHO are not fundamental. It just seems awkward to me to have distinct exchange particles of some forces. I understand that you can work the interactions either way but it just seems smoother to understand virtual particles as transient ripple structures during the interaction of the quantum electron field and the quantum EM field in a capacitor.

Vacuum is a dielectric that can be polarized due to the limited speed of electrical interaction in free space (as in classical space not quantum vacuum). If you think of the universe as a series of independent particles with interactions this makes it much harder to visualize action at a distance by some mathematical construct of a field to explain particle interaction.

Back to something a little more concrete, let's take near-field communication (NFC) which has several useful applications demonstrated and real.

This the functioning of NFC relevant at all to our capacitor discussion?

I'm not really moving this to magnetism, which I know would be much worse for all, but take two magnets, put them like pole to like pole and push.

Is there any way, anything I can interpose between them that can eliminate that repulsion ?

Found some of the wave modes here are longitudinal and do not include "c" in their characteristic equation. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plasma_wave Apparently propagating only in a plasma. But that one guy said something about the vacuum being polarizable?
Well yes, plasma waves (something I deal with daily) can be longitudinal because there is a media (electrons/ions) for them to travel. I think most of us agree in the 21st century that there is no magical aether that EM waves travel in so longitudinal scalar waves are impossible (except in the minds of some Tesla fans). Now c is not a limit for everything electromechanical in Maxwell equations but it is for single interactions. For instance you can change the polarization current density 'as a group' faster than light speed to generate EM waves but the waves themselves can't travel FTL so you generate a electromagnetic shockwave similar to a sonic boom.

If this is useful for anything only time will tell.
