IR LED / Phototransistor distance sensor. Use reflected beam and intensity of reflected beam to correlate to distance. Use a pulsed LED to insure ambient room light does not interfere. Voltage of amplified output correlates to distance.

 

A bjt oscillator as astable oscillator, you can google it.
