Powering a flyback without any special circuitry?

I'm mainly worrying though about whether or not the flyback and the potentially very cheap components in the circuit of the monitor (this is apparently a no-name brand monitor) wouldn't be too pleased with a short circuit like a Jacob's Ladder drawing power from the flyback. I've heard of HV supplies salvaged from random things like microwaves/TVs/oil burners dying because of the stress of being run through a Jacob's Ladder or (more commonly) a Tesla coil. I can't say whether or not the stories are true, it is the internet after all, but I thought I might bring it up.
