Potential Differences

In lab this week, we constructed a potentiometer. And now I am terribly confused--

Why must the potential difference supplied by a power supply be larger than the voltage source in series with a galvonometer?
and
Why is it not necessary to know the exact voltage across the length of the wire in the potentiometer?

potentiometer = variable resistor
potential difference = voltage

...or perhaps you mean something else by potentiometer. Could you please explain your problem further.
