Can I split this cable lengthways to make two 8 way cables, and then solder the ends onto the pads that were intended for SOIC16 IC.
Will it fall apart during the split?
Will it melt during soldering?

 

I have done something similar but you really need to be careful with the heat.

I did it with 63/37 which has a relatively low melting point being a eutectic alloy, but I think if I was doing it today I'd try something like: https://www.amazon.com/Solder-Bi57-6-No-Clean-Lead-Free-Temperature/dp/B0195V1QEI/

On the other hand you gain only a few degrees, so I am not sure it beats 63/37 which is easier to get to wet. I suppose I would test.

If you don't have 63/37, you should anyway. I got some really nice Chipquik paste: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0186IM0P0/ which so far I am very pleased with but otherwise I use very fine Kester solder.

You really need so little of that paste, it will last for a very long time. I have a lot fo different solder. I like to have just the right thing.
