Pease identify the device in the attached photos that I found in my daughter's backpack.

Background info:
  • Daughter found it last night in the main pocket of her backpack. She did not put it there.
  • About the size of a dime. Pictures are on normal lined paper.
  • No visible antenna.
  • largest chip has the following inscription: SJK 16.000. Looked it up and it is a quartz resonator 16 Mhz to 32 Mhz.
  • smaller chip has inscription TAeAS with weird fonts... S is more flowing while other letters look more like Roman. Looked it up and nothing came up.
  • Powered by small button cell... sorry did not look to closely but I think from photos CP 1225.
  • Contained within a very heavy duty clear plastic sealed pouch. Cut it open to remove the battery.
  • Numbers imprinted on board 4715 and 3 on separate lines.
Did a little keyboard research and seems a bit too complicated to be a loss prevention 'security' device (she has been using her backpack for about 1/2 year) and not complicated enough to be the guts of a Bluetooth wireless tracker.

Any help would be appreciated. Not sure if we should be contacting authorities or not but wife is a bit jumpy about this one as is my daughter.

Thanks,
Kevin

Oh, and there is a blackish hard blob of what appears to be heat dissipation paste (maybe) on the center of the board with something underneath it. I didn't try peeling it off as I did not want to damage the board.

Oh, and thank you Wayneh. I will try and take better photos when I get home tonight. I like my Moto phone but their cameras stink.

Thank you eric, but for what purpose?

I am trying to determine if I should be going to the authorities after finding this in my daughter's backpack (actually she found it and brought it to me).

Any ideas to investigate or information is appreciated.

The blob is a circuit on board -- basically an IC without a regular package. The right side of the board looks almost like the outline of an antenna.

Eric,
Best guess so far. Seems a bit complicated from ones I have seen but then again this bag was bought at the Hilfiger store on Fifth Avenue in New York. Generally those tags are passive though, aren't they? Seems weird to have a button cell on it.

Problem solved. Thank you Eric. You win the cookie! On your suggestion, I called the Hilfiger store where we bought the backpack. Not a security tag but a Bluetooth tracker from the Tommy Hilfiger Jeans 'Explorer' line. Kind of a neat little contraption. I can think of some uses for this. May have to repackage and hide in my kid's car when they start driving, lol.

BTW, credit in attached image to thefasionrobot.com on their teardown of the explorer line. Also maybe copyright of Hilfiger. Credit where credit is due.

No, no! You don't want to do that.
You would be an accessory to whatever crime they pin on you.
Me? I’ve never seen that device before. I’d have to modify my instruction, though. Clean the device with alcohol and vigorous rubbing with latex gloves on.

There’s other issues if they have video of me taking a crap.

It certainly did look like some sort of RF package. I am guessing that the pack is fairly new, or has not been explored completely.
So is the device for tracking the pack? That could be very useful in case it got ripped off. I was going to add something like that to my computer case a few years back after a guy picked it up after it passed through the security xray machine. I had to announce very loudly that he had my computer, folks turned and looked from all around. But I got my computer and all the software I had written on it back. And the security people did nothing at all to the guy, for the attempted theft. So I wanted to add a very loud horn that would go off if a timer was not reset, so that it could be tracked if it got away from me. Presently the TSA would not allow such a device any more because they would not understand it.
