Looks like C devices crossed over to F devices. 16C84 and 16F84.

As I recall, those ancient clunkers required a Picstart Plus or equivalent.

Also the C type is available in two versions.
The OTP , one time programmable. (most times there are in a plastic housing, these can not be eraised anymore).
The version with a window, that can be eraised with UV light. These most times have a ceramic / stone like housing.

You two probably know about Ubicom Scenix SX's. Goal is to interchange them with C54.

Only if you erase them first, using a UV EPROM eraser. Some PICxxCxx parts cannot be erased, as they don't have the UV-transparent quartz window over the die. These are known as OTP (One-Time Programmable) parts.

Regarding this interest in PIC 16C54/57 and Scenix SX28, etc.

I am solely interested in seeing how they made this SX Editor compiler.

It ties in with making a current PIC C compiler and assembler for hobbyists

There are that kind of thing around in abundance. They just seem to have downsides.

I would say Microchip's top gun at the moment is the 32MX.
