If you try to do a root mean square average on power, you get the wrong answer. Root mean square averages only work on parameters that need to be squared to give power.

In text books, one usually find the explanation of the root mean square average alongside a sinewave, with a derivation of the DC voltage that will result in the same dissipation in a resistor. The association between rms and a sinewave, has somewhere been misconstrued that rms is a property of sinewaves. So "rms power" has be a misnomer for sinewave power i.e the power dissipated in a certain load resistors by the largest amplitude the amplifier can produce at a given level of distortion. In order to make the figures better, use a higher level of distortion.
well…it’s the spec everyone uses in the music industry.

I think you are overthinking this.
If you need more precise info, ask the manufacturers. What I’m writing is that RMS is the only rating that’s always provided by a quality manufacturer.

Other than that, your ears should provide the info you need.

just make sure the amp RMS output rating is lower than the speaker RMS rating at a matched load, and the sound level is acceptable to your ears.

A speaker has a AES rating: a properly specified and meaningful rating defined by the Audio Engineering Society.

(and, by the way, we don’t do “matched loads” any more, the load impedance will be many times greater than the output impedance of the amplifier)

Ok....but AES means nothing to musicians in the music industry. But they understand RMS ratings.

That's too much info to a non-technical buyer.

Nobody understands RMS power, because there isn't such a thing.
Judging by how many dead loudspeakers I've seen over the years, musicians don't understand power ratings of any type.

Everytime you see "RMS power", change it for "average power" and it makes sense.
Somehow, people who are not educated enough (even though they can hold a PhD), confused this in the past and it spread.
In portuguese there's the wrong translation of "faults" (in the context of power grid faults). The translation is "falta". The translation back of the wrong word is "lack/absence/shortage". Even google translator has this error in its intelligence. I'm sure it was trained on the internet...
The problem is that a fire spreading is hard to contain.

It seems that the human nature is somewhat different than would be needed for a lot of professions. Musicians should know the basics of the physics so they don't waste money on equipment they blown. I know electric engineer that doesn't follow the electric/electronic theory, he goes guessing (and he's graduated it's been about 17 years). My doctor friend told me there are doctors that have no idea what they are doing... There are a lot of examples in every profession. I blame they not being able/encouraged to have a solid time of finding out how to achieve ikigai with the world.

Yes...Technically they don't, but they don't care to either.
RMS they understand, but their understanding is different:

100W RMS= OK
250W RMS= Better
500W RMS= Rockin!
1000W RMS= @W$% Great!!!
