In every one of the instances shown or described, the PC fan is used as the "prime mover", which is not being used as a generator.. That is to state that the generated power is not coming through the wires that would feed power to drive the motor in the fan. So I see no problem as to credibility with that. The efficiency may be poor, but that is not part of the discussion.
And for MAX, the 3-phase voltage that might be produced by externally spinning a PC fan motor will probably not be available at the terminals that normally would power the fan, unless some internal modifications are done.
