What old gear was / is easier to use / better results than modern gear ?

Starter .
Avo multi meter v dvm.. trying to see how a voltage is changing. .

 

By the same token, I used analog multimeters in resistance mode to diagnose capacitors. I could get a sense of the capacitance value by watching the movement of the meter.

Same here using one of my old Simpson 260 meters on resistance and using the +/- polarity switch to swap polarity on my leads. Watching the needle bounce tells a story.

I own a analog VOM, a Samwa, purchased in Akihabara years ago. Mostly out of nostalgia.

But even myself, an analog meter enthusiast (look at my avatar), have to concede that my DMM is superior to it.

I do use it occasionally when looking at trends, as explained by other posters.

 

I also have both a digital Rigol and an analog Tektronix scopes. Again, the digital wins, hands down.
The only time I use the analog scope is to display XY-plots, a function at which the digital scope sucks.

 

i used analog VOM to test transistors, very simple and easy to quickly determine if specimen had gain lower that expected. and it could be used even without batteries. but there is a reason analogs bit the dust... DMMs are superior in so many aspects that it is not even fair to compare. for example analog meters were fragile and had to be handled with care. DMMs can be tossed across the room, bounce of two walls and a floor and often - they would still work.

 

Love my Dmm , have a few of them , have an avo for times I need a trend .
Scopes.
These to me reached a maximum user status in the early 2000s .
Analog was phased out , digital was user friendly and you knew what it was telling you . I have a nice Tektronic , and a Pico scope .
Have share in a big high speed scope , it's so difficult to set up it has to have a "auto setup" button ! .
Great capabilities , but for 99 percent give us the pico scope or tech .
