I want to purchase a variac with a built in ammeter, to adjust input ac voltage while monitoring current (which can identify possible shorts before they damage circuit components). What I found online are variacs with a voltage meter only. Does anyone know of a product that has both a voltmeter and ammeter?

 

On the lab at the company I work, there is a Powerstat model L2M226C, which has both an ammeter and voltmeter.
But it is old, I ignore whether it is still available.

Thanks for your reply. My work lab also uses the Powerstat (with built in ammeter). It's incredibly expensive, if you can find one online. I'm trying to find a low cost alternative that I can use in my home hobby lab.

 

You might consider just adding a small panel analog AC ammeter to a standard Variac.

 

Powerstat variacs are expensive, true. But they also are built like tanks.

Perhaps a second hand one.

Thanks. Adding an external AC ammeter to a variac will most likely be the solution that I go with.

Depending upon the design, you may be able to mount the meter in the Variac's electrical box.
