I removed the SMD and replaced it with a 220nF ceramic capacitor. Started the motor up and same result. Runs for 5 seconds and shuts off.

if your circuit is like the one on page 25, no,

the length of time its taken to fix it, would have bee quicker to use a light dimmer

We've been down that road already. This is a learning objective for me now. I don't like to give up on anything because it was too hard. There is a leson to be learned here and i want to learn it. That is beside the obvious which you just stated. I want to know why it doesn't work. Plain and simple. I could toss it aside very easily but nothing gained from that. Best lessons I've learned are from things like this.

He is referring to the one just right of center and just below center marked 155. I am referring to my hand drawn diagram. I am not sure which one it is on Temec or Atmel diagrams?
So I should try 2.2uF now?

It finds its way back to pin 7 through another SMD cap? and joins the negative side of three other electrolytics/a ceramic to pin 9/ and a 47 Kohm pot

YES I KNOW, it looks like its an electrolytic + on pin 2, thats why i believe its C1 on the datasheet as its the only electrolytic with its + to ground... YOUR Drawing is wrong!!!

Are you looking at the ATMEL datasheet? This does not have an OptoCoupler or rectifier. I want to make sure I am on the same sheet.
