My friend uses a lot of these wire connectors on his model railroad. Are they still used and/or sold? Is there maybe a generic name for these 'metal pin' type connectors? Thanks for any help

Have you tried checking model train websites?

Searched for pictures in google and these are some of the wire connectors they like to use:

 

If this is for any new applications, there are the common R.C. XT-60.

Thanks everyone for responses. Pretty sure now that my friend is using Screw Terminal Blocks for his connections. I think RC XT-60 is the way to go for me. Thanks again!
