Reading the MT3608 datasheet (https://www.alldatasheet.com/datasheet-pdf/view/1131968/ETC1/MT3608.html), it infers that it could possible be used as a "step-down" converter, say 12V in, 5V out. Nowhere does the text say that it can't.

Does anyone know this module well enough to say whether it can, or cannot be used in this mode ?
