The wiring is quite messy. I have the negative lead connected from the 6v battery to the source. the drain is running to the negative terminal of the LED. and the gate is connected to the 3 volt output of the PIR. the LED's positive lead is connected to the 6V battery(positive side)

If it is still unclear i can try drawing a diagram.

Don't you have a stray resistor in that ballpark?

 

Purchased a 10k resistor and installed between gate and source, all seems to be working now.
