Apparently even though "Tariffs" have been applied, the 800USD deMinimus tax discount has just been removed. So, not only have prices increased on imports, you will not only be charged state sales taxes but also federal import taxes? as well. The exporters have already been charging state taxes but the federal ones will be collected from ??? Customs house? Just how is this going to work? I have a sneaking suspicion that, in the end, it will cost more in handling and paperwork than it will collect in taxes. Which is why the deMinimus Tax act was created... May sound good in theory but not on paper!

Very likely. It's similar to the business personal property tax that many states have. If I buy pretty much anything beyond materials and supplies (i.e., consumables) for use in my business, I'm supposed to track it and pay property tax on it every year. Yep, that's right. Buy a stapler, and I'm supposed to add it to a ledger and pay property tax on it every year. The tax goes to the state, but the counties are responsible for enforcement. I found out about this the hard way when my employer had to provide information to the state about the various equipment leases they have. I had several computers and some lab equipment on lease to them, so my company name was included. That triggered a visit from the county and we had to spend an entire day going through everything and coming up with valuations on whatever we found. Fortunately, the guy was very reasonable and willing to settle for the two of us making reasonable, off the cuff estimates of the values. At the end of the day, my tax bill went up by $18. Not even enough to come close to covering the standard mileage rate for him to come out to the house, let alone his time -- and not to mention the value of my time. I asked him if there was any provision that would just let me pay a flat amount, say $50, a year so as to avoid the hassle of tracking everything. He said that there wasn't, but also said that they only enforce it when they have to, so his recommendation was to just ignore it going forward and deal with it again if it ever becomes an issue. That's what I've been doing for more than twenty years and it's never become an issue again.

I am no tax expert but I believe this was one of the primary reasons for the IRS to institute the standard deductions. Unless the taxpayers have something that it is worthwhile to itemize, just apply a flat rate deduction (depending on a few, simple factors) and call it a day.

The IRS oversees federal taxes not state. Plus, the standard deduction applies to individual taxes, not business taxes. In most states that levy business personal property taxes, you have to submit a declaration to the county (or whichever agency is designated) annually that includes the purchase price, installation cost, freight, and taxes. Basically, the total cost to replace the item. From that, you are allowed to deduct accumulated depreciation. This included any durable property that is not part of a building and that is used to produce income. That includes desks, furniture, office equipment, computers, tools, bookcases -- pretty much everything except real property and consumables (livestock and farm machinery is often excluded), If the total comes to less than some nominal amount, you don't have to file the declaration -- but the kicker is that you have to prepare the declaration in order to establish that you don't have to file it. There is nothing comparable to a standard deduction for this -- that's something that small businesses have been pushing for for years.

Oooooh, now I understand!
Thanks for the explanation. As I said I am not a tax expert by any stretch of the imagination.

EDIT: and now I can see why is such a hassle.

What I've read is that the de minimus exemption will be removed from the rest of the world beginning around the end of August. I think it has been removed for China and Hong Kong for a while now, but my last AliExpress order seemed to be exempt. I think they're shipping from warehouses outside of China to get around it.

There was also some explanation indicating that the August date was the shipping date and that the change wouldn't go into effect for items shipped before then until around Oct.

I think you're reading all your references incorrectly. "SUSPENDING the exemption" means collecting duty on packages valued at $800 or less, not excluding them.

Well, I quit buying from AliX for a while but went back to buying out of need for a few things. I found the prices slightly higher (<25% tariff increase), but the de minimus exemption is still in effect. I received an SMD fitting torque wrench today with no extra charges from customs. I did mistakenly put my faux business name on an order (computer auto form fill) of ~300USD for some rf gear from Japan and got a sheaf of papers from customs to fill out to determine custom's charges. I explained that it was not a business transaction but for personal use and that went away. I won't make that mistake again!

Same here. I noticed that the price of some items in my cart went up significantly.

I suspect they're getting around the de minimis rule by shipping product from countries other than China and Hong Kong. That loophole goes away the end of Aug when the de minimis exemption goes away for the rest of the countries.

I ordered several items today and might order more before the end of the month.

The tracking for items I bought from AliX recently shows that they shipped from china. Before all this started, I was getting some shipped from Vietnam as well as china. It is hard to tell but some china originating items are advertised as US shipped on eBay. Even before this tariff mess started AliX was starting to ship items from warehouses? located outside of china including Vietnam, US, Cambodia, and I think somewhere in Europe as well. They were trying to compete with what Temu was doing to their sales and trying to cut shipping costs to compete pricewise and to speed up their notoriously slow deliveries to the US.
