Hey everyone,
I have been in a wheelchair for most of my life and I always used manual chairs. The basketball type very light weight. But lately I have been getting sore and I want an electric chair. Just for going to stores etc. I have a mobility scooter and I know this question has been asked over and over. Can you add a bigger motor for more speed? I can change the controller and battery as needed. I am wondering about the internal gears in the differential. Am I going to blow it apart with more speed? And has anyone seen any gear sets that you can buy for higher speeds? I am also in the middle of converting one of my old chairs to electric front drive with a mountain bike front end. I have to order a kit for it but that won't be hard. I can't wait to be able to just go uptown and not have to wear myself out doing it.Thank you for any information.

It has to be a tradeoff between speed and stability especially considering road hazards. The 3-wheel trike with a mt. bike front end sounds intriguing and likely far more stable than most mobility scooters that I've seen. The lower the center of gravity the more stable it should be. But my only experience with wheelchairs was for a year or so after having my left cancerous kidney removed before I moved on to rollators and now a walking stick. Have also lost feeling from mid-thigh down so my balance and mobility ain't that great...

Seek expert guidance before modifying the wheelchair for more speed. Use reputable kits, follow manufacturer recommendations, prioritize safety, and test thoroughly. Best wishes for enhanced mobility!
