I have a MAX4420 driving an IRF510 Mosfet in the circuit below. The second I turn on the power the 4420 gets super hot. This happens whether "JI" is closed or open. I have also tried with/without 5Ohm resistor, no difference.

I must be overlooking something basic. (I have checked for shorts and opens many times. Routing is correct. )

 

Does pin 1 have a dot next to it?
The wiring, as shown, is looking from the top of the IC.
If it's all correct then you may have a bad IC.

Yes, the wiring is looking top down. No dot per say but the little half moon at the top of the chip. I'll try another driver IC although I had put a new one in last night replacing the first one.
