Make your plans for August 2017. Total solar eclipse

While I didn't expect it to get really dark here (we peaked at 91%), I was surprised that the darkening was just barely perceptible. The much larger effect was the cooling -- I'm guessing that it felt like it was 10°F to 15°F cooler. I don't know if the actual air temperature dropped much, but the loss of IR on the skin was very pronounced.

The shadows through the trees were really interesting, as was using your hands to make pinhole apertures.

The 2024 eclipse will pass through the heart of Maine and swing down through the eastern part of Texas. It looks like Niagara Falls will be near the center of the path, so I bet there are going to be LOTS of weddings and honeymoons up there on the 8th of April!

FWIW

As viewed from down here at my west-central, WI 'office' (≈45°N 91° 30'W) clear-sky daylight was not significantly muted to the eye at ≈ 85% occultation -- though one might say it 'took on' a decidedly 'polarized' appearance...

Loads of fun!

Best regards

What a depressing tune! A guy basically putting a positive spin on bodily mutilation? From what I'm seeing the zeitgeist of the sixties could be summarized with: "if I ever lose my mind I won't have to make sense no more"o_O
JC if you'll take my advice (as one who has tried upon many occasions - and always in vain) you'll make no attempt whatever to understand the 60's! -- I'm told one needed to 'be there' - and we just weren't:( --
But then, to render E.A. Poe: "perhaps it is but one of the great mercies of God that 'er lasst sich nicht lesen."

Best regards
HP:)

I ran a few quick and dirty charts of solar voltage and power. Our 'log' eyes adjusted quickly to the changes but real power took a nose-dive.

DC battery voltage at solar array.

Linear Power scale

Power into battery bank.

One of my colleagues just arrived back from a trip to India. While there he heard several times (i.e., a fairly widespread rumor) the claim that the eclipse was going to cause the U.S. electrical grid to crash. It'd be interesting to find out where a claim like this starts. Was it some kneejerk claim made up out of whole cloth by someone that hasn't got a clue but that then got traction? Or did it morph from something more mundane such as hearing a story about how rural cell networks along the path of totality were likely to be jammed and rendered all but useless due to so many more users than they were designed to handle?

I get two major pieces of i formation from your post.

1) you have trouble linking B to C in a logical problem. You tend to try linking B back to what you know, A.

If the topic is eclipse, and electrical grid, wouldnt a logical topic be solar power and the fact that large regions arw losing 80% or more solar energy be a concern - especially regions served by solar.

2) you are too lazy to plug your question into google but willing to type it into AAC - you dont trust google? Why is AAC your first source and not google?

Great time on a large Granite dome. We were in the Totality band but we had such a view we could see distant mountains that were not in the zone and some very distant clouds that looked like a pink sunset.

Did you become one with your inner self?

Did you notice any change in the aura surrounding your companions?
